Never Alone : Human, Animal, Artist

Lepidos series

A meditation on sublime animal beauty, this series draws on the intricate, overlapping lepidos—scales—of moths drawn to the light of full moon nights. Rather than my usual gradated painted hues, I worked with translucent drafting paper, its surface imbued with subtle, textural marks. Each scale-like form was cut, shaped, and layered into rhythmic three-dimensional patterns, echoing both the delicacy and resilience of these nocturnal creatures. The translucency allows light to pass through and across the work, shifting with the viewer’s movement, much like the iridescent shimmer of a moth’s wing in motion. In making these pieces, I aimed to capture not just the beauty of natural form, but the quiet, almost imperceptible vitality that pulses beneath it—continuing the long history of art shaped by close observation of the natural world.

Never Alone : Human, Animal, Artist was held at Rokingham Arts Centre from 6- 24 March 2024.
