Heartlines II

In this iteration – “Heartlines II”, Sarah Thornton-Smith continues with a secondary installation of intertwined sculptural foldings and repeated patterns, exploring her diasporic journey and cultural amalgamation. Rooted in Malay-Chinese heritage and influenced by Western exposure in Boorloo-Perth, “Heartlines II” employs monoprinted motifs of Australian flora on translucent hosho paper. Enmeshed amongst these floral motifs are accents and textures from urban landscapes recollected from her years in Singapore. Recalling the story telling nature of familial batik sarongs, the resulting banksia-inspired patterns and urban textural patterns and hues; stories, culture and societal implications are inextricably interwoven. Tracing lines incorporated throughout the folds establish a symbolic connection between Perth and Singapore, revealing cultural hybridity and the interplay of identity, heritage, culture and landscape.
